Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

ir_500.png

Approximately 150 independent Mac and iPhone software developers have pledged to contribute their sales for the day of January 20th to Haiti relief. The effort is called Indie+Relief.

SmileOnMyMac will contribute the sales of PDFpen and TextExpander to Mercy Corps and Doctors Without Borders.

The needs in Haiti are immense. Its capital lies in ruins, as many as 200,000 may be dead, and survivors are increasingly desperate for food, clean water and shelter.

Check out Indie+Relief. You’ll find an incredible collection of software from the best Mac and iPhone developers and your purchases will help ameliorate a dire situation.

Macworld Day 1: Celebrities R Us

Wednesday, January 7th, 2009

We are here at Macworld San Francisco 2009. We are at booth 407: come by and say “hi”. It was a busy day, but I did manage to post a few photos on Flickr.

A couple exciting things to report: PDFpen is featured on the Modbook tablet Mac at the Axiotron booth. One of the team is at the Axiotron booth all day showing folks how cool it could be to edit PDFs on a tablet. Today, Axiotron unveiled their newest model, and their most famous member of their board of advisors, Steve Wozniak, demonstrated how to use it. At one point, Philip turned to me and said: “Look! He’s using PDFpen now.” How exciting to see our software being used by the co-founder of Apple Computers.

Later in the day we were visited by not one, not two, but three Mac celebrities. Tonya and Adam Engst of TidBITs and Take Control Books came by the booth to chat with Greg and me. And while they were there, Guy Kawasaki stopped to say hi, and ended up talking with us about TextExpander. He’s a fan.

Great day. More tomorrow. I need to get to sleep!

Macworld! Free Passes! Celebrity Demo!

Wednesday, December 31st, 2008

mw_logo_web.gifIt’s New Year’s Eve, which means we are working furiously to get ready for next week’s Macworld Expo in San Francisco. We’ll be at our booth, #407 in the South Hall of the Moscone Center, January 6 – 9, 2009.

(I have to start getting used to typing 2009…)

We’ll be showing off the latest version of PDFpen 4, as well as DiscLabel and TextExpander. Please do come by to see us and to check out the newest features of our software. (And we will have candy!)

If you don’t have an Exhibit Hall pass yet, we still have some to giveaway. Just use this link to register for the show. January 4, Sunday, is the last day to take advantage of these free passes. The number is limited, so don’t delay.

I am excited to announce that Don McAllister, the host and producer of ScreenCastsOnline, will be in the SmileOnMyMac booth on Thursday, January 8, from 2 pm to 3 pm, to talk about the Mac Switcher Bundle. The bundle is a great collection of software (TextExpander, 1Password and Witch) plus a special series of ScreenCastsOnline video tutorials aimed at helping new Mac users get the most out of their Macs.

DonMcAllister1106.jpgDon will be doing short demos of the Mac Switcher Bundle software, as well as showing off ScreenCastsOnline. He’s definitely achieved Mac celebrity status with his best-of-class video tutorials and his frequent appearances on Mac Break Weekly, MacVoices, Mac Roundtable, and many others. You can hear Don on a special episode of MacVoices with me, 1Password developer Roustem Karimov and Witch developer Peter Maurer.

Don was also a faculty member on the Geek Cruise last month, and achieved celebrity status on the ship when the crew thought he was missing in Santorini. (It turns out their card readers were faulty–he was, in fact, aboard. He even has proof. You can hear the whole story on this episode of Mac Roundtable…)

SmileOnMyMac in Miami

Sunday, March 2nd, 2008

I just got back Miami this week on a combination work/personal visit. I was born and raised here, and I never pass up a chance to come down to Florida during February.

I gave a presentation to the Gold Coast Mac Users Group, showing off PDFpen and DiscLabel primarily. Several members of the audience chimed in to share their happy SmileOnMyMac customer stories. What a fine and intelligent group! :-)

I also gave a demo at the Apple Store at The Falls in South Miami. The demo coincided with the enormous power black-out that we had in Florida last week. The demo was postponed for the 45 minutes the power was out.

Apple Store customers are sure dedicated. Lots of people waited outside the store waiting for it to reopen. It was crowded almost before the computers had booted back up!

Houston MacFest and Apple Store

Friday, October 5th, 2007

Last weekend, the Houston Area Apple Users Group held their annual day-long MacFest and SmileOnMyMac was one of the sponsors. I went down to demo our products at the MacFest and had a GREAT time. My first visit to Texas!

Lesa King, co-host of Your Mac Life and my pal, was one of the speakers, along with Andy Ihnatko, Bob LeVitus and Chris Breen. I learned a lot from listening in on their sessions. I also got to eat barbecue and Tex-Mex, of course. The HAAUG folks were really nice, and I especially loved meeting SmileOnMyMac customers who came up to me to tell me how much they loved our programs.

Lesa and I gave presentations at the Apple Store in the Houston Galleria, hers covering Digital Photography and mine about PDFpen. Since we were there at the store, I asked Lesa (who is a big fan of PDFpen) to pose for another entry in our gallery of Apple Store photos!

PDFpen at the Alderwood Mall

Tuesday, September 4th, 2007

PDFpen Apple StoreHere’s a photo at the Apple Store in the Alderwood Mall in Lynnwood, Washington, north of Seattle. Being Labor Day, we took my young friend Clara for some final back-to-school clothes shopping. I spotted the Apple Store, and Clara graciously posed for me.

Clara might not know what a PDF is, but she does know all about Macintosh, despite being raised in a PC household. She loves making little movies with me on my MacBook Pro, and she always asks to see the latest “Get-A-Mac” ads.

iPhone to the Rescue

Neither Clara’s mom (my best friend from college) nor I had ever been to the Alderwood Mall. We had no idea where anything was or even if we were in the right place when we first pulled into the parking lot. “Not a problem,” I said. “We’ll find the mall directory on the iPhone.” And we did. I pegged the cool meter with Clara, to boot. (Just don’t ask me to go back to Abercrombie & Fitch…)

C’mon, all you mall rats. Send photos of PDFpen at your local Apple Store to jean@smileonmymac.com – and get a free SmileOnMyMac app!

PDFpen and the iPhone

Saturday, June 30th, 2007

I decided to get a photo of PDFpen in the Apple Store–at the same time as I picked up an iPhone.

iphone PDFpen and Jean

It was a fairly painless experience. My buddy Edward and I went over to Pioneer Place mall in downtown Portland at around 2 pm, and we were about 80th in line. What stunned me is that within a half an hour of the store opening at 6 pm, we had our iPhones and were out the door. The Apple Store was quick!

A few more photos are posted on Flickr.

So far, I think the iPhone is really neat! The activation via iTunes was a model of user-friendliness. Everything works pretty much as advertised. What would really make it great is some excellent third-party software programs. :-)

PDFpen comes to Long Island

Wednesday, April 25th, 2007

That’s right, folks! You don’t have to shlep on the L.I.E. all the way to Manhattan to get your favorite PDF editing tool for the Mac. From our intrepid correspondent, George Canellis:

Newsflash! The retail box of PDFpen has been spotted in the Walt Whitman Apple Store in Huntington Station, New York! Here’s your product in the hands of yours truly, who just happens to be proudly wearing his official Your Mac Life hockey jersey which, as luck would have it, is sponsored by SmileOnMyMac. What a coincidence!!! ;-)

Congratulations on scoring some prime shelf real estate in our favorite retail store!!

Thanks, George! (George gets a free product from SmileOnMyMac, and you can too! Just send your Apple Store PDFpen photos to jean@smileonmymac.com. If we post your photo, you’ll get your choice of one of our great products.)

BTW, I’ll be coming to Long Island to speak to the Long Island Macintosh Users Group (LIMac) on October 12th.
